There is little dispute that Champans and Clos des Chenes are two of the top, if not the absolute best, vineyards of Volnay. They provide a different expression of this commune's varied terroir and age brilliantly.
Domaine Francois Buffet have both in their portfolio and offer them at the same price as all of their other Volnay 1er Crus. In our mind that makes Champans and Clos des Chenes absolute bargains.

The 2020 Volnay Champans 1er Cru has an elegant bouquet with lifted red cherries, crushed strawberry and light undergrowth notes, the one-third whole bunch nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine backbone, very fresh and quite saline with a brisk, quite spicy finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent.

The 2020 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru, which contains one-third whole bunch, offers dark cherry, bergamot, cranberry and light earthy notes on the nose. The palate is very well balanced with fine substance, quite crystalline red fruit with excellent tension and energy on the finish. Superb! (Drink between 2025-2045). 93-95 Points
