Magnificent Moutonne Grand Cru Monopole “The Montrachet of Chablis”

Moutonne is one of Chablis' finest expressions
Wines arrive next month
Domaine Long-Depaquit are the sole owners of the small (2.34 ha) but revered Grand Cru vineyard MOUTONNE.

It is located at the heart of the amphitheatre straddling the Grand Crus Vaudesir and Les Preuses. It has a south south-west exposure and with its very steep slopes (almost 40 degrees) and kimmeridgian outcrops it is well protected from the north winds.
Spring frosts can still be a problem and the domaine has gone to the unusual lengths of installing environmentally friendly heated electric wires. To combat worms that feed off the grapes there is an electrical system that causes "sexual confusion" in the worms and destroys their ability to reproduce.

The extra care in the vineyard produces a wine of rare character. Moutonne is a Grand Cru Chablis with the style and complexity of a Grand Cru white from the Cote d'Or. It is a wine of intensity and precision, elegance and finesse with extraordinary length. Austen Biss, writer of A Guide to the Wines of Chablis says "They are usually wines of sheer delight".
Today we feature the 2019 and 2020 vintage of this super cuvee. Both vintages arrive next month.
Domaine Long-Depaquit are in Tim Atkin MW's Top 25 producers. At the very top of the tree is the Grand Cru Moutonne which Tim Atkin MW describes as "the Montrachet of Chablis". 'nuff said!

Quite exotic nose (mango!) but also with some good flinty character. This is an excellent example of a top-class Chablis from a warm vintage. The wonderful balance of richness, minerality and lively acidity makes this exciting now, but it’s also got the structure to age for a number of years. Drink or hold. 95 Points

Moutonne is one of Chablis' finest expressions and the 2019 will be another in a long list of memorable vintages. Although not the final bottling, it is clear that there is great power here, combined with finesse and a lightness on its feet. Savoury, umami, notes on the finish. Wood is a little evident now but will integrate beautifully once in bottle for 6-12 months. A lovely example, both powerful and restrained. Drinking Window 2022 - 2032. 95 Points

Very attractive pale lemon colour. Ripe bright fruit, even, some banana in the mix. Moutonne has its own character, sensual and with a good backbone, catching the sunshine and holding it well. Acidity is certainly there and very good length. Does not lose the marine, but plays more on the flesh and the ripeness of grape than the coquillage. 94 Points

2.3 hectares that sits 95% in Vaudésir and 5% in Preuses. Like the previous three – this with 1/3rd or less barrel in the elevage.
Here is width, power and some floral complexity. I love the energy here – another waterfall of flavour – but flavour richness brought by concentration. Long, lingering – and with a persistent weight of flavour in the finish. Very impressed – bravo!

As hoped for, this is another fantastic example of the special qualities of Moutonne, with great intensity of pear and apple fruit, with a faint tropical edge. Despite the concentration the fruit is pure and the focused acidity keeps the palate fresh and wanting more. The oak is barely noticeable and the wine finishes with a chalky, dry note which adds even more to the appeal. Very, very classy. Drinking window 2023-2037. 97 Points

Made of Les Vaudésirs with a 5% dollop of Les Preuses, this is always a unique wine. This vintage shows good cut with chiselled acidity and lifting minerality. The sappy midpalate is a combination of golden apples, sweet peaches and crushed oyster shells. 2023-2034. 95 Points

Pale lemon colour. The nose indicates class and power but is not quite ready to speak to us yet. More intense than Vaudésirs, with a very clean powerful backbone of white fruit, that just opens up a little at the end, and in a more harmonious place than Les Clos at the moment. The finish is very precise but with extra intensity lurking. Should be very good. 93-96 Points

This nose goes wider and deeper, a little of the fleshiness of a Preuses. Wide, silky, overtly mineral but not a structure of angles or walls – all remains calm and smooth. The finish is the largest of all so far, layered and with a slightly warmer, spiced, fruit. Delicious.

Burgundies from some of the most famous producers

Wines from the most famous makers of Burgundy are hard to find. In fact, these days they are almost impossible to source. Not to mention expensive.

The opportunity to taste wines from these special makers seldom comes along for we mere mortals.

We have put our thinking caps on, called in a few favours, and have put together a dinner featuring wines from 12 producers that one could call Iconic.

If you search the internet you will only find a few of these wines available for sale anywhere in Australia. Most never hit the market.

If you have always wanted to taste these almost impossible-to-find makers here is your opportunity!

We have 12 seats available to this dinner at Hemingway’s on Thursday 5 May 2022.
