A more elegant and cooler nose speaks of various red berries, lavender and a whiff of anise. The delicious, round and caressing flavors possess good verve and reasonably good detail while delivering fine persistence on the dusty and again, moderately austere finale that flashes just a bit more depth. Lovely and understated. (Drink starting 2026)
White soil, lots of limestone - ‘it’s like the Clos des Chênes.’ Bought in 2007. This was a villages until reclassified in about 2006/7.A bit more colour here. A vertical nose - lovely high tones of fruit and flowers but fine depth too. Fresh, incisive, good direction, growing wider as your mouth waters. Love the finishing intensity here, slightly floral - love - such excellent wine.
The 2019 Monthélie Les Clous 1er Cru has become a Premier Cru since around 2007. It has a well-defined bouquet with red cherries, strawberry and touches of wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry. Vivid red cherries intermingle with raspberry and orange pith, with a very cohesive finish that shows good persistence. Very fine.
