A fresh but deeper purple. Perhaps a touch animal on the nose, but with clean pure fruit behind. Not much bouquet yet. A little bit strict on the palate up front, raspberry and redcurrant behind. Just ripe enough. Medium plus finish.
Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report"
A little tight but much cleaner, fresher fruit than the Bourgogne today. A little more mouth-filling and with extra freshness. I love the depth of flavour here - fine red fruit of lovely freshness. Waves of finishing flavour too. Very good wine.

Another overlooked appellation is Monthelie, here in the form of the village Aux Founereaux, located above the village. The bouquet offers fresh, cool, red-berry fruit - this is from a cooler area than the core of Volnay. It has a lovely, rocky, mineral note that really shines with the cool fruit.
