Barros

Barros

The Port House of Barros was founded in 1913 by Manuel de Almeida who started a port shipping company. Almeida was joined by Manoel Barros, who is said to have started as an office boy, but married Matilde Almeida, sister of the company founder.

After Barros joined the firm it became far more aggressive and during the 1920's and depression years of the 1930's purchased ailing port firms expanding the business substantially.

This Portuguese firm is best known for its Colheita Ports that date back to the 1930's. Colheita Ports are made from a single vintage and are aged slowly in large casks for what can be many decades. With extended age these wines take on flavors of dried fruits, nuts, citrus and exotic spices, while becoming very smooth and complex the older they get.
