Late in 2012 I spent some time visiting some highly regarded domaines in the Macon in search of a serious value chardonnay to add to our portfolio. The area is vast and the range of wine styles varies enormously from full and rich to fine and mineral.
No prizes for guessing what I was in search of!
Domaine de la Verpaille was my first stop and I could have ended the search there and then. This very small domaine is quite new. They produce a small range of wines from some unbelievably old vines. Since 2009 they have been organic and use very limited sulphur and copper prefering natural methods inthe vineyard.
They practice slow fermentation, no chapitalization and ageing on the lees. Oak plays a minimal part. The vineyards do the talking.
This results in very pure and mineral wines, with lovely freshness and vibrancy. They are very impressive wines that earned Domaine de la Verpaille the New Talent Award from French Guide La Revue du Vin de France.
