Domaine du Chateau Gris

Domaine du Chateau Gris

Chateau Gris was constructed in 1802 in the middle of its 3.5 hectare vineyard in Nuits-St-Georges. After the vines were destroyed by phylloxera in the late 19th century the chateau was renovated and instead of the usual coloured Burgundian tiles the roof was covered in grey slate. The locals began to refer to the building as Chateau Gris (the grey castle) and the name stuck.

Two wines are produced by the chateau's high, terraced vineyards. At the top of the property is a 0.70 ha parcel of Chardonnay. The name of the lieu-dit is Les Terrasses. The domaine produces around 6000 bottles of the unique Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Chateau Gris Monopole red from 2.80 ha of pinot noir vines.

The high altitude (280 metres), steep slopes facing due east and clay-limestone soil make for extremely elegant and fresh expressions of Nuits-St-Georges.
